Redemption’s Legacy

When famine struck, Naomi thought her story was over—but God was just getting started. In this powerful message we explore how God redeems our past, redefines our identity, and brings legacy out of loss.

Message Notes

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness... For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
— Psalm 107:8–9

God fills the hungry — not just with food, but with purpose.
Even in famine, He prepares a future.

  1. God Uses Us Best at Our Worst

Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God...
— Ruth 1:16–17
  • Naomi thought her life was over — but her pain attracted Ruth to the God of Israel.

  • God used her grief to birth legacy.

God doesn’t wait for your strength — He moves through your surrender.

2. You Are Not Defined by Your Pain

Call me not Naomi, call me Mara...
— Ruth 1:20–21
  • Naomi renamed herself “bitter,” but God and others kept calling her “pleasant.”

  • God’s purpose was greater than her pain.

What feels like loss to you may still look like legacy to God.

3. God Gives Legacy Through Spiritual Investment

Thy daughter in law... is better to thee than seven sons... and they called his name Obed...
— Ruth 4:15–17
  • Naomi thought her future was finished — but God gave her a grandson through Ruth.

  • Her investment bore fruit, and her name was remembered in the line of David.

God redeems our losses by using our love to bless generations.

Response

  • Jesus came from the same Bethlehem Naomi returned to — now filled with the Bread of Life.

    • He still fills the hungry with good things (Luke 1:53).

  • You are not your past. You are not what you lost.

    • In Jesus, you are washed, sanctified, and justified (1 Cor. 6:11).

If you feel empty, God is ready to fill you — and your future still has fruit.
